First, draw a circle on the kitchen floor with yellow mustard. Make the circle about three to four feet in diameter. Draw another circle inside that circle, about four inches inside the original one, but do it in catsup, instead. Squeeze bottles work best for this.
Once you have your two circles, draw a five-pointed star, with the tips just BARELY touching the catsup, and draw it with honey. It doesn't matter what sort of honey - I find wildflower honey works rather well for this. Now that you have your working circle drawn, get your handy-dandy phillips head screwdriver (the cross-type driver, not the flat-type), and unscrew the mixer. Place the screws you remove from the mixer in the catsup/mustard ring, careful not to touch either substance. The plastic housing should then come loose. If the housing fully detaches from the unit, put whatever big plastic parts in the center of the star, for safekeeping. Replace whatever bits and pieces need replacing, and let sit in the star for about an hour, afterwards. Reassemble, going exactly the reverse of how you took it apart. Don't cut corners, and for god's sake, do NOT smudge the stuff on the floor! Once it's all assembled, plug in, test out, and enjoy. Remember: Practice safe snacks. Always use a condiment. |

He mocks my kitchen-witchery, when he is merely Wallowing In Ignorance... Who's the Appliance Guru (1st class) here, pokey? Now, you could get a customized spell of gear-replacement if you included something as trivial as a model number. Kitchen Aid makes a number of mixers, after all. Just because my instructions might not have been pertinent to YOUR mixer doesn't mean it wasn't pertinent to another's... Now, yours might require the catsup-circle being outside of the mustard-circle. And don't get me started on dodecahedrons... |

mr guru i apologize for your assumption that my mixer is kitchen aid hand mixer. after all comunication is a two way street and i never did mention that it is a stand mixer m# k45sswh.
although i do appreciate your geometric suggestions the only shape i may put my stand mixer in is the unigon (waste basket). that is of course unless you (or someone else) with all your (or their) knowledge and knowwhere can tell how to get the case open on my mixer (stand variety). thanks doug |

That's a mighty perty mixer you got there. I'm jealous. I'll have to bug my husband to pick up one'f them buggers for me.
It looks like it's in the No User Servicable Parts category. From the couple of pictures I saw, there should be a couple of screws on either side of the top unit. My guess is that they're hex screws. Take your handy-dandy allen wrench and have at. And use honey-mustard for that inner circle, instead of yellow mustard. |

all screws have been removed. alas my frustration with said mixer.
the man wants 100 bucks to fix. mixer only cost 200. on my scale that means buy new mixer save old for parts. but hold on a new gear kit cost 35. thats a worthy amount to spend for a fixed mixer. so now the mixer is on the work bench. unscrewed yet unopened and still unusable. thank you mrs. guru |

Yo Mon, here's a parts breakdown that'll hepya replace them gears while you're squirting ketchup and mustard all over your kitchen floor:
![]() The worm gear is item 12 and the whole worm gear assembly is item 58. If you haven't already bought the gears, you can get 'em here. Ok, let the repair rituals begin! |

although "remove the screws" is always helpful that picture is worth at least 997 additional words.
got worm gear ordered and mixer apart and saved 20 bucks. thank you doug |

Didn't I say remove the screws in my original post? I know I did... something about phillips head screwdrivers or some such... something like that...
And remember, DougieDoug! Practice safe snacks! Always use a condiment! |

There are ten screw holding the mixer cover (Item 1) to the base (Item 27). Four of them are easy to remove. The heads of the remaining six are partially blocked by the planetary gear base (Item 33). I can get them about 1/8 inch out. That gives enough room to cut them off with a Dremel if necessary, but the Way of the Samurai calls for the Use of Cunning before the Application of Brute Force. Besides, I don't want to sprinkle all the electrical goodies with metal shavings.
Perhaps Doug could enlighten me since he has already walked this path. |

pretty simple now, take a small punch and drive out the pin on the "planetary gear base" then you can just pull that down and off the machine. after removing the screws behind the chrome plate, it should come apart ok. When you get it all apart, there is a long spring that runs from the top of the govenor to somewhere behind the micro-switch. Just respond to me and tell me where the heck the other end of the spring goes so I can put this darn thing back together again.

I saw the pin but was reluctant to drive it out before knowing what might happen. There is a "piston ring" on the drive shaft. Should that be removed, too?
Good news on your spring: follow the "buy your parts here" link that was posted a few messages back. Samurai-san's Parts Vendor has both the gear train diagram and an electrical parts diagram. In the electrical diagram, there is a long spring such as you describe. It is Item 4 in that diagram. The free end points off into space. Thanks for pointing out that it connects to the governor (Item 36 in that diagram). The end that IS shown looks like it fits the slot in the end of the speed control lever. |

I have the case open and got the replacement for a stripped gear. Arigato, Samurai-san!
The gear set is covered with lots of grease. This humble novice has two observations/questions: 1. The broken gear teeth went SOMEWHERE --- probably buried in the grease. It seems prudent to remove the grease keep those bits-and-pieces out of the works. 2. The grease resemble ordinary automotive lube gun grease. Murphy's Law is alive and well; if I use lube grease it will probably destroy everything. Is there a recommended replacement? |

Still can't get the top off to get at the gears. What's the secret. I've removed all the screws I can find but the top cover still will not come off.

Eureka!!! I was just starring at the mixer when the "appliance gods" rammed into my head the idea of prying off ( be careful not to scratch) the crome ring. Then did the same to the bottom section and voila, the top was loose. Now I am attacking the gear mechanism to get to the worm gear. I hope I can get all this back together. Thanks Doug.

kitchenaid stand mixer woes | ||
|
My kitchenaid stand mixer was having trouble tilting its head back and forth. I started messing with it and ended up removing (only) the black flat plastic screws in either side of the unit. (your diagram part 57). When these came out, a spring and the little metal "stick" attached to it came flying out too. I put them back in,and then the mixer won't turn on at all. I'm sure I put them in in the wrong direction, but I can't find anything about them in my manual. Can you advise me on how to replace them properly?

Help! What did I do?? | ||
|
I successfully took my KitchenAid 5 qt. professional (K5SS0B) apart to look for any damage to the worm gear.
My problem was/is that it bogs down when I'm mixing a double batch of yeast dough. My manual says don't make bread recipes calling for more than 10 cups of flour. The most I've ever tried was 6 cups of flour and my motor completely stops while kneading and makes a humming/buzzing sound like it's trying to go, but it's too hard and the dough hook just stops. Then I get a funny smell. So, no damage to the worm gear that my untrained eye could see. So I figured I'd put it back together and call the people at KitchenAid liars for printing the 10 cup rule in their manual. I concluded that I need more power and this would be a good excuse to buy the new 6 quart Professional for an additional 200 Watts of power. BUT, my mixer is only 3 years old and I'd like to sell it. It is still very useful, as long as you don't want to make two loaves of bread, which I do often. So here's my additional problem: |
